Long Term Care Fees – in the news
Over recent months the Daily Express and the Daily Mail have led with front page news stories about the issue of long term care for the elderly. It seems that any plans to make the current system fairer have been ‘kicked into the long grass’ by the Government.
The latest front page news from the Daily Expres published Tuesday 17th January 2012 claims that even if there is a cap introduced that limits an individuals exposure to care costs, this cap could be set at £60,000. This would mean a couple can expect to face a bill of up to £120,000 between them meaning most people would still have to sell their family home to pay this bill. Indeed, recent statistics from the Dilnot Commission indicate 1 in 10 of us (that’s 1 in 5 couples) will face a care bill in excess of £100,000.
